Altitude FAQ

At what altitude does AMS start in Pakistan?

Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) typically begins above 2,500 m. Hunza (2,438m) and Skardu (2,228m) are right at the threshold — most travellers feel mild effects on day one. Deosai (4,114m) and Khunjerab Pass (4,693m) are in the high-risk zone.

How do I acclimatise for K2 Base Camp?

Standard staged ascent: 2 nights in Islamabad → fly to Skardu (2,228m), rest 2 nights → drive to Askole (3,000m) → trek to Paiyu (3,400m), rest day → Urdukas (4,200m) → Goro II → Concordia (4,600m) → K2 BC (5,150m). Total ~7–9 days up.

Can children go to Hunza or Khunjerab?

Hunza (2,438m) is generally safe for healthy children with a slow drive up via KKH. Khunjerab (4,693m) should be avoided for under-12s and anyone with heart or lung conditions — go only as a day visit, do not sleep there.

Not medical advice. Acclimatisation guidance based on Wilderness Medical Society protocols. Always consult a doctor before high-altitude travel.
