Frequently asked questions
How tall is K2?
K2 is 8,611 metres (28,251 feet) high, making it the second highest mountain in the world after Everest and the highest point of the Karakoram range.
Is K2 in Pakistan?
Yes. K2 stands on the border between Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan and the Xinjiang region of China, and every standard climbing and trekking route approaches it from the Pakistani side through Skardu and Askole.
Can you visit K2 without climbing it?
Yes. The Baltoro Glacier trek takes non-climbers to Concordia and K2 Base Camp at around 5,150 metres. It usually takes twelve to eighteen days round trip from Skardu and requires no technical climbing skill, only fitness and acclimatisation.
When is the best time to go?
June to August. Outside that window the Baltoro is unsafe for trekking, and winter conditions on the mountain are among the most severe anywhere on Earth.
Why is K2 called the Savage Mountain?
The name comes from the 1953 American expedition. It reflects the mountain's steepness, exposure to sudden storms and the fact that it has no straightforward descent route once a climber is above Camp 3.
In short
- K2 rises to 8,611 metres on the Pakistan–China border and is the second highest mountain on Earth.
- The peak sits at the head of the Baltoro Glacier in the Karakoram range, inside Gilgit-Baltistan.
- An Italian team made the first ascent of K2 in 1954, and the first winter ascent followed in January 2021.
